Driving through the roads of Pune has become a bumpy ride for many residents, thanks to uneven sewage and rainwater channel covers causing chaos on the streets. These covers, which are either too high or too low, are leading to potholes, raised spots, and an overall uneven driving surface.

With 1,600 kilometers of roads in Pune, the PMC is constantly repairing and maintaining them for various reasons. However, during these repairs, the height of sewage channel covers is often neglected, resulting in the hazardous driving conditions that residents are currently facing.

Vehicles are hitting these uneven spots, causing accidents and discomfort for drivers. Back and neck pain, vehicle damage, and safety risks are just some of the issues being reported by citizens. In some areas, the iron covers of sewage channels are broken or missing altogether, leaving open drains that are dangerous for pedestrians and drivers alike.

Areas like Lokmanyanagar, Dhankawadi, and Sadashiv Peth are just a few places where these problems have been reported. The PMC has acknowledged these complaints and is currently conducting a survey of sewage channel covers across the city. Aniruddha Pawaskar, head of the PMC’s road department, has assured that work is underway to repair the damaged covers, with a completion date set for January 15.

Residents, however, are pointing fingers at contractors for rushing through projects without ensuring quality work and at PMC officials for failing to properly inspect and enforce standards. The consequences of these issues include broken rainwater drain covers, difficulty driving, missing covers, and poor coordination between road construction and cover alignment.

It’s clear that something needs to be done to address these issues and ensure the safety and convenience of drivers and pedestrians in Pune.
