Hey folks! Exciting news coming out of Mumbai and Pune today. The Bombay High Court has just ordered the Maharashtra state government to provide a safe house for an interfaith couple in need of protection. The couple, a Hindu man from Pune and a Muslim woman from Mumbai, have faced opposition from their families since falling in love in college in 2019.
But fear not, the state government has assured the court that the safe house will be ready by 6 p.m. and the couple has already been relocated. This is a big step forward for interfaith couples in Pune, as the state home department recently set up guidelines for securing such couples and establishing safe houses.
The couple had applied to marry under the Special Marriage Act on December 14, but due to threats from their families, they needed a safe place to stay. Their lawyers, Mihir Desai and Lara Jesani, explained that the woman even had to quit her job because of familial disapproval. The man, who is set to return to work on Monday, requested police protection.
After hearing arguments from both sides, the High Court ordered that a decision be made on the man’s protection request within 48 hours. And to ensure their safety, the court also directed the police to provide an additional guard for the safe house.
It’s great to see the legal system stepping in to protect those in need. Let’s hope this sets a positive precedent for other interfaith couples facing similar challenges. Stay tuned for more updates on this heartwarming story.
