Hello Pune residents! Exciting news coming your way starting July 1st – Pune police will be introducing two I-Bikes (investigation motorcycles) in each of the city’s five police zones. These motorcycles, operated by trained police personnel, are set to speed up the collection of forensic evidence from serious crime scenes that carry a punishment of seven or more years of imprisonment.

This move is in line with the new criminal laws under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Bharatiya Sakshya Sanhita, which are expected to be enforced next month. The I-Bikes will be equipped with all the necessary tools and materials needed to collect crucial evidence like hair strands, fingerprints, photographs, blood stains, and saliva.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime), Shailesh Balkawade, emphasized that the new Bharatiya Sakshya Act stresses the importance of swiftly collecting evidence to present in court. Forensic personnel and constables will be required to document the entire collection process using digital cameras, with these video recordings also being submitted in court.

Currently, each police unit in Pune has a forensic van that is dispatched to crime scenes for evidence collection. However, the introduction of I-Bikes is expected to enhance this process by allowing personnel to reach crime scenes quickly, especially in urban areas. With two motorcycles per police zone, rapid response is guaranteed.

According to Balkawade, weather conditions like rain or strong winds often jeopardize evidence if forensic experts arrive late. The new motorcycles are intended to prevent such issues and ensure timely evidence collection. A senior forensic sciences expert stressed the significance of immediate evidence collection from crime scenes involving murder, rape, arson, and other serious crimes. Timely collection of evidence provides crucial clues for detecting cases and securing convictions as it is scientifically validated.

Get ready for a more efficient and effective crime scene investigation process in Pune with the introduction of I-Bikes by the police department!
