As Pune continues to grapple with foggy conditions, residents can take solace in the fact that the city’s air quality has improved to “satisfactory” levels. Despite reduced visibility and atmospheric haze, the Air Quality Index (AQI) reached 105 on December 22, a welcome change from the 158 recorded last week.

The heavy fog on Saturday caused quite a stir on social media, with many sharing their experiences of the weather. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) attributed the dense fog to moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal. Although conditions improved slightly on Sunday, many areas still faced challenges with visibility throughout the day.

Meteorologists have noted a rise in minimum temperatures, with expectations of reaching 20-21°C by December 24. This will create warmer nights during the Christmas period, while maximum temperatures are expected to remain steady.

IMD’s senior meteorologist, SD Sanap, explained that the interplay of high moisture levels and low temperatures caused the dense fog on December 21, which is expected to persist for the next 2-3 days during early mornings.

Of the city’s 15 monitoring stations, only five reported AQI above 100. Despite reduced visibility, the overall air quality has improved compared to last week, thanks to meteorological changes.

Looking ahead, Pune is set to experience cloudy skies and potential light rain on December 26, due to moisture-laden winds from the north. This marks a shift from the cold, clear conditions observed earlier in December.

As Christmas approaches, residents are advised to prepare for hazy mornings and potential drizzle, providing relief from extreme cold but still posing visibility challenges. Stay tuned for further updates on the weather conditions in Pune.
