After more than four years of being closed for renovations, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is finally getting ready to reopen the Dr. Homi Bhabha Hospital, much to the relief of residents in Shivajinagar and its surrounding areas.

The delay in reopening the hospital was reportedly due to difficulties in finding a suitable-sized lift to fit the narrow lift duct of the newly renovated four-storey building. However, MLA Siddharth Shirole recently met with PMC health officials and additional municipal commissioner Ravindra Binwade to discuss ways to overcome this obstacle.

Despite being aware of the lift duct issue before the Lok Sabha elections, no concrete steps were taken to address it until now. The PMC has now decided to order a custom-made lift, with input from experts in the public works department, to ensure structural stability and prompt resumption of the hospital’s outpatient department (OPD).

Dr. Kalpana Baliwant, health officer of the PMC, confirmed that plans are underway to start OPD services as soon as possible, followed by the introduction of maternity facilities after essential works are completed.

The closure of Dr. Homi Bhabha Hospital has been a major inconvenience for the community, but the new and improved building promises to provide better healthcare accessibility with its OPD, indoor facilities, and maternity care services. With the lift issue close to being resolved, residents can look forward to the hospital reopening soon, marking a significant milestone in enhancing healthcare infrastructure in Shivajinagar.
