The roads of Pune are facing a pollution problem due to burning and improper disposal of garbage. To combat this issue, a new flying squad has been established to crack down on offenders. This squad, supported by vehicles, aims to monitor and penalize those responsible effectively. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has expanded the squad by adding ten new vehicles, bringing the total fleet to 18.
Taking inspiration from Indore City in Madhya Pradesh, the PMC has formed this flying squad to tackle littering in the city. Equipped with the latest technology, the squad is now more efficient in its operations. The inauguration of the ten new vehicles took place on Tuesday, with PMC Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale leading the event. Other officials present included Additional Commissioner Prithviraj B.P, Deputy Commissioner Sandeep Kadam, Deputy Commissioner Raju Nandkar, Prasad Jagtap, and Mukund Barve.
The Solid Waste Management Department has been cracking down on littering in public places, the use of banned plastic, noise pollution, spitting in public spaces, and waste burning. Between October 2023 and December 24th, fines totaling Rs. 4 crore 3 lakh 71 thousand have been collected in 72,778 cases. Additionally, 6,268 kilograms of plastic have been seized during this period.
