Pune’s ‘Grassland Safari’ project, launched by the Forest Department in October 2023, has become a shining example of successful eco-tourism. As it celebrates its first anniversary on December 23, 2024, the project has garnered praise for its innovative approach to conservation, community development, and tourism.
The Grassland Safari operates in Kadbanwadi in Indapur Tehsil and Shirsufal in Baramati Tehsil, showcasing Pune’s diverse grassland biodiversity. Visitors have the opportunity to see a range of wildlife, including wolves, hyenas, Chinkara (Indian gazelles), and various bird and reptile species in their natural habitat.
Over the past year, the project has conducted over 3,000 safaris, generating significant revenue and providing employment opportunities for locals. Trained guides have earned a substantial income, with indirect employment benefiting nearly 30 families in rural areas.
Forest officials have praised the initiative for its success in combining conservation efforts with community well-being. Chief Conservator of Forests, N. R. Praveen, highlighted the potential of such initiatives, while Deputy Conservator of Forests, Mahadeo Mohite, emphasized the importance of engaging local communities in conservation efforts.
Looking ahead, the Pune Forest Department plans to enhance the visitor experience, expand the initiative to inspire similar projects across Maharashtra and India, and promote shared responsibility in conservation efforts. The Grassland Safari has already achieved significant milestones in creating a sustainable model for eco-tourism, generating revenue, and raising awareness about the ecological importance of Pune’s grasslands.
The project serves as a model for successful eco-tourism initiatives, demonstrating how conservation and community development can work hand in hand. By fostering a culture of shared responsibility and celebrating the benefits of conservation for all stakeholders, the Grassland Safari sets a precedent for sustainable tourism projects in the region.
