The Maharashtra government is gearing up to tackle the runway extension project at Pune’s Lohegaon airport, with a key meeting set to take place soon. The proposed expansion will require between 225 and 250 acres of land to accommodate wide-bodied aircraft and boost airport capacity. The state government will kick off the land acquisition process, with financial contributions from various stakeholders including the state government, Pune Municipal Corporation, Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, and Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority.
The Obstacle Limitation Survey conducted earlier this year received a positive response from the Ministry of Civil Aviation, indicating progress in the project. The estimated cost of the runway extension is ₹160 crore, with the state government taking the lead in funding at 60%.
In addition to infrastructure upgrades, the government also plans to introduce Udan Café, low-cost food outlets at airports to address passenger complaints about expensive food options. The first Udan Café has already opened at Kolkata airport, with plans to expand to Pune’s Lohegaon airport in the near future.
The runway extension project is expected to enhance airport capacity, improve connectivity, and boost economic growth in the region. With a focus on smooth coordination among stakeholders and government support, the upcoming meeting aims to finalize plans and responsibilities for the project, setting the stage for significant advancements in Pune’s aviation landscape.
