The National Green Tribunal (NGT) in Pune has recently taken a strong stance against pollution in the Shivganga River and Lendi Nala in Bhor, Maharashtra. The tribunal has directed local authorities to provide a detailed report on the issue by February 10, 2025, following a complaint by a concerned citizen.
The complaint, verified by the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), highlighted significant pollution in the river and nala. A recent inspection by the MPCB confirmed these allegations, prompting the board to conduct further investigations and submit updated findings to the tribunal.
In response, the NGT issued a directive to the Bhor Municipal Council, Bhor Sarpanch, and Pune District Collector to report on the status of waste management and pollution control measures in the region. The deadline for submission is four weeks from the issuance of the notice, with a hearing scheduled for February 10, 2025.
The NGT bench, led by Prakash Shrivastava and Justice Dinesh Kumar Singh, stressed the importance of addressing the pollution issue promptly. They emphasized the need for immediate action to protect public health, maintain environmental sustainability, and hold local authorities accountable for effective waste management.
Authorities are required to investigate pollution sources, prepare detailed reports with actionable measures, implement solutions like improving waste management systems and installing pollution control mechanisms, and conduct regular monitoring to prevent future violations. Citizens are encouraged to raise awareness about pollution, report instances of waste dumping, and advocate for stricter enforcement of environmental laws.
The NGT’s proactive approach in addressing pollution in the Shivganga River and Lendi Nala highlights the significance of environmental preservation. By involving all relevant authorities and emphasizing the importance of sustainability, there is hope for effective solutions to restore the health of these water bodies and protect them for future generations.
