Government institutions in Pune are facing criticism for owing a whopping Rs. 7.51 crore in unpaid electricity bills to MSEDCL. The Pune Municipal Corporation, General Administration, and Police Administration are among the high-profile defaulters.
The scale of the dues is alarming, with 4,672 government establishments in the Pune Zone responsible for the mounting arrears. Various key government departments, such as General Administration, Zilla Parishad, Municipal Corporation, Education, Gram Panchayat, Home Ministry, Health Ministry, and Agriculture Ministry, have outstanding bills ranging from a few lakhs to over Rs. 80 lakh.
The delayed payments are causing financial strain for MSEDCL, hindering the company’s ability to maintain service quality, manage employee salaries, and cover essential maintenance expenses. The reasons behind the payment delays are attributed to budget constraints and delays in fund allocation by government institutions.
MSEDCL has implemented strategies to address the issue, including sending timely notices, avoiding drastic actions like cutting off electricity for essential services, and engaging with authorities to ensure prompt payment of outstanding bills. The company remains hopeful that the dues will be cleared by the financial year’s end, emphasizing the importance of financial discipline to prevent disruptions in essential electricity services.
