Winter nights in Pune are getting hazier with bonfires lit by security staff for warmth. These fires, known as shekotis, are worsening the city’s air quality, especially during the early morning and night when pollutants linger close to the ground.
The Pune Air Action Hub is urging the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to take action against this pollution. They recommend providing enclosed cabins, warm clothing, electric heaters, and imposing fines for waste burning. Awareness programs for security personnel are also suggested to educate them about the health risks associated with smoke exposure.
Taking inspiration from Delhi’s initiatives to provide electric heaters to construction workers and Resident Welfare Associations, Pune residents are hoping for similar proactive measures. However, feedback from residents reveals gaps in communication and enforcement by PMC.
Immediate action is crucial to protect public health, support workers, and enhance air quality. Collaborative efforts between PMC, property owners, and residents are essential to combat bonfire pollution and create a healthier environment for all in Pune.
