Pune is currently experiencing a surge in the import and registration of high-end automobiles, with the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) reporting a significant increase in registrations of imported four-wheelers and two-wheelers. In 2024, there was a 78% increase in the registration of imported vehicles compared to 2023, with 554 vehicles imported until November.
The cost of registering an imported vehicle is quite high, with registration fees ranging from ₹3,000 for two-wheelers to ₹5,000 for four-wheelers. Buyers also have to pay 20% of the vehicle’s total cost as road tax to the RTO.
Popular high-end brands like Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche dominate the four-wheeler segment, while motorcycles like Harley Davidson and Ducati are popular in the two-wheeler category. Some specialized vehicles, such as agricultural machinery, are also being imported.
The growing preference for customization and exclusivity is driving the demand for imported vehicles. Manufacturers like Mercedes-Benz offer personalized features through their Completely Built Units (CBUs), such as exclusive exterior designs and high-quality interiors.
Dealers and manufacturers collaborate to import vehicles directly for customers, making the process more convenient for buyers. Pune, alongside other key cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Coimbatore, has become a significant hub for imported vehicles due to its affluent population and rising demand for luxury cars.
The surge in imported vehicle registrations in Pune reflects the city’s growing affluence and evolving taste for luxury. As personalization options expand and high-end brands cater to this demand, the trend is expected to continue its upward trajectory in the luxury automobile market.
