The Mumbai-Pune Expressway, a lifeline connecting Mumbai and Pune, is gearing up for a major facelift. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has put forth a plan to widen the expressway to eight lanes, aiming to tackle the escalating traffic congestion that has been plaguing commuters for years.
The expressway, which was inaugurated in 2002 and named after Yashwantrao Chavan in 2009, has been a game-changer in reducing travel time between the two cities. However, with around 155,000 vehicles using the road daily, it has become evident that the current six-lane setup is no longer sufficient.
The proposed expansion project, with an estimated cost of ₹6,800 crore, will be carried out in two phases. The first phase will focus on widening the road and bridges, while the second phase will involve expanding the existing tunnels to accommodate the additional lanes. If approved, the project is expected to be completed by 2028-29.
The benefits of the expansion are clear – reduced congestion, improved safety, enhanced economic connectivity, and shorter travel times for commuters. The project holds great promise for the region, but timely approval and execution will be crucial for its success.
MSRDC is confident in overcoming administrative hurdles and delivering a more efficient and safer expressway for the residents of Mumbai and Pune. The proposed expansion is a significant step towards meeting the growing transportation demands in the region, ensuring smoother and more reliable journeys for all commuters.
