Hey Pune folks, have you heard about the recent blood shortage in the city? It seems like some blood banks have been up to some shady business, selling blood to other states. The FDA has cracked down on this illegal activity, suspending 21 blood banks in the Pune Division and issuing show-cause notices to 32 others.
The shortage of blood became apparent after Diwali, when complaints started pouring in about blood banks selling blood and its components to other states. The FDA took action by collecting transaction data from all blood banks in the Pune Division, which covers districts like Pune, Satara, Sangli, Kolhapur, and Solapur. The National Blood Transfusion Council gave the green light for an investigation.
A thorough campaign was launched, and from April to November, 81 blood banks were inspected. Violations were found in 29 blood banks, leading to various actions being taken, including the permanent cancellation of one license. Show-cause notices were issued to 32 other blood banks. A detailed report on these actions has been sent to the National Blood Transfusion Council.
Girish Hukare, Joint Commissioner of the FDA (Drug) in Pune Division, emphasized the importance of following rules and guidelines when it comes to blood collection and distribution. Blood banks must operate within the law and should never engage in trading blood or offering inducements to donors.
So, Pune residents, let’s do our part and donate blood to help alleviate this shortage. Remember, every drop counts!
