Pune, December 28, 2024: Sad news from Pune today as veteran journalist Dr. Kiran Thakur has passed away at the age of 77. Dr. Thakur, who was the former head of the Department of Communication and Journalism at SPPU, was undergoing treatment for a brief illness at a private hospital in Pune where he breathed his last.

Dr. Thakur leaves behind his wife, two sons, daughters-in-law, and grandchildren. His sister, Bharati Thakur, is the founder of the Narmadalaya organization. In accordance with his wishes, his body was donated to medical research.

The renowned journalist had been hospitalized due to fatigue over the past week and despite medical efforts, he passed away this morning. His sons, Nachiket Thakur and Parth Thakur, expressed their gratitude for the outpouring of condolences from across the country.

Dr. Thakur had a distinguished career in journalism spanning over three decades, working for publications such as Pune Daily and contributing to UNI news agency, Indian Post, and The Observer of Business and Politics. In 2001, he transitioned to academia and joined SPPU as a professor, where he initiated various programs to promote research and development in the field.

Known for his groundbreaking research on web editions of Indian newspapers, Dr. Thakur authored several notable works, including “Newspaper English” and “Handbook on Print Journalism,” along with numerous research papers that have had a lasting impact on journalism and communication studies.

After retiring from SPPU, he continued to serve as an honorary professor at institutions like MICA, FLAME University, and Vishwakarma University, leaving a lasting legacy as an educator and mentor.

The passing of Dr. Kiran Thakur is a significant loss to Pune’s journalism and academic communities, and he will be remembered for his dedication, research contributions, and influence as a mentor.
