Pune has officially surpassed Gurgaon to become India’s third-largest software exporter city, with an impressive ₹1,05,818 crore in IT exports during the financial year 2023-24. Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw praised Pune’s remarkable growth over the past five years, positioning it just behind Bengaluru and Hyderabad in IT export rankings.

The city’s IT journey began in the 1990s with the establishment of the Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park in Hinjawadi, attracting global IT giants and fostering a thriving tech ecosystem. Pune has leveraged its talent pool, infrastructure, and innovative mindset to scale its IT export capabilities.

Pune’s IT exports have seen consistent growth over the past five years:
2019-20: ₹50,157 crore
2020-21: ₹56,938 crore
2021-22: ₹70,487 crore
2022-23: ₹94,106 crore
2023-24: ₹1,05,818 crore

Key drivers of Pune’s IT sector success include the adoption of advanced technologies, a diverse talent pool from prestigious educational institutions, and strategic location and infrastructure advantages.

However, Pune’s primary IT hub, Hinjawadi, faces challenges such as traffic congestion, waste management issues, and the need for infrastructure upgrades. Industries Minister Uday Samant recently met with the Hinjawadi Industries Association to address these concerns and pledged to escalate unresolved matters to the Chief Minister’s Office for prompt action.

Looking ahead, Pune’s focus on innovation and collaboration between industry stakeholders and the government will be crucial for sustaining its growth trajectory. Addressing infrastructure bottlenecks in Hinjawadi and other IT zones will be key to maintaining Pune’s competitive edge in the global IT landscape.
