In a bid to make travel easier for passengers at Pune Airport, Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Murlidhar Mohol, has given the green light for the operation of five pre-paid cabs and five autorickshaws directly from the new terminal building. This move aims to provide a hassle-free transportation option for travelers, addressing common complaints about delays and overcrowding.
Minister Mohol stressed that the decision was taken to enhance the overall passenger experience. He mentioned, “I have instructed the Pune airport director to allow five autorickshaws inside the terminal building premises, similar to the permission already granted to cabs. While there may be some technical challenges, this step is a positive move towards improving convenience for travelers.”
The new system ensures that a fixed number of pre-paid cabs and autorickshaws are always available at the terminal, eliminating the need for passengers to walk to designated booking points outside the airport.
However, the initiative has sparked some concerns among AeroMall authorities, who have been grappling with issues related to unauthorized autorickshaw drivers. YS Rajguru, Vice President of AeroMall, highlighted the problem, stating, “Unauthorized drivers frequently enter the premises illegally, causing disorder and intimidating staff. Despite lodging complaints with the police, the issue persists.”
On the flip side, the move has garnered support from the LV Antaral Autorickshaw Sanghatana, an authorized auto association. Prakash Rajguru, the association’s president, expressed optimism about the decision, saying, “A delegation from our association met MP Mohol, and he agreed to allow pre-paid autorickshaws at the airport. While we share concerns about unauthorized drivers, it is the responsibility of AeroMall and airport authorities to manage them. We hope this move will boost legitimate business for authorized drivers.”
The introduction of pre-paid services inside the terminal building is expected to bring several benefits for passengers, including reduced delays, convenience, and improved order. However, challenges lie ahead, particularly in dealing with unauthorized drivers who disrupt order, cause revenue losses for legitimate drivers, and pose security risks.
Authorities are urged to work together with law enforcement to tackle this issue effectively and ensure a smooth and safe travel experience for all passengers at Pune Airport.
