Residents of housing societies in Wakad, Pimpri-Chinchwad, are scratching their heads after receiving unexpected notices demanding payment of non-agricultural (NA) tax. This unexpected development has left many residents confused, especially considering the Maharashtra government’s announcement in October 2024 to abolish the tax, which was seen as a positive step for urban property owners.
The NA tax, a longstanding burden on property owners in municipal corporation and council areas, was finally set to be eliminated following a decision made by the Eknath Shinde-led Maharashtra government. However, despite this announcement, housing societies in Wakad have recently been receiving demands for NA tax payments.
Residents like Vishal Titre from Riddhi Siddhi Heights Society and Sushant Kulkarni from Alliance Nisarga White Lilly Housing Society have expressed their surprise at receiving these notices, especially since they were under the impression that the tax had been abolished.
A senior district administration official shed some light on the issue, explaining that the government’s decision to abolish the NA tax has not yet been formalized through an official government resolution (GR). As a result, local authorities are continuing with their standard procedures, including issuing annual NA tax demand notices.
With no updated guidelines from the government to halt the collection of NA tax, housing societies in Wakad are seeking clarity on when the abolition will take effect, how to handle the current demand notices, and what will happen to payments already made or due.
The lack of clear communication from the government has created confusion and uncertainty for property owners in Wakad and beyond. Residents are eagerly awaiting formal directives from the state government to resolve the issue and provide the relief promised by the abolition of the NA tax. Until then, they remain in limbo, waiting for clarity and guidance.
