The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is making moves to tackle the city’s traffic problems head-on by proposing the development of missing link roads. This initiative aims to improve connectivity and reduce traffic congestion in Pune. To make this plan a reality, the PMC has asked the state government for a ₹100 crore allocation to acquire the necessary land.
Background and Proposal
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar recently highlighted the importance of addressing the issue of missing link roads during an inspection of Vidyapeeth Chowk. He instructed officials to come up with a detailed proposal to present to the state government for approval. Following these instructions, the PMC Road Department has formally requested ₹100 crore in funding from the Additional Chief Secretary of the Finance (Planning) Department.
Prioritizing Connectivity
Nikhil Mijar, a traffic planner for the PMC, explained the municipality’s approach to tackling the problem. The focus is on connecting roads that are currently blocked off by various distances, including segments ranging from 1-100 meters to beyond 1,000 meters. The first phase of the plan involves linking 33 missing road segments, with 14 already acquired and three connected. The goal is to address five major missing links in this initial phase, with the requested funding crucial for land acquisition, as many landowners are requesting cash compensation.
The Challenge of Land Acquisition
One of the major hurdles in addressing missing link roads has been acquiring the necessary land. Although over 400 missing road links have been identified in Pune, progress has been slow due to delays in securing the required land. The PMC’s plea for state funding underscores the urgency of resolving these issues to enhance the city’s infrastructure and traffic flow.
