Tragedy struck in Yerwada early Sunday morning when a 38-year-old autorickshaw passenger lost his life in a horrific accident. The driver, allegedly drunk, was driving on the wrong side of the road when the autorickshaw collided with a parked cab near Aga Khan Palace on Pune-Nagar Road around 1:50 am. The victim, Dharamveer Radheshyam Singh, a resident of Wadgaonsheri, was pronounced dead upon arrival at a nearby hospital.
The autorickshaw driver, John Raju Swamy, 31, from Wadgaonsheri, has been arrested and faces charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and drunk driving. The police have confirmed that Swamy was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.
The cab driver, Parag Sharma, who witnessed the incident, stated that he had parked his cab by the roadside and was about to confirm a booking when the autorickshaw crashed into his vehicle. Despite his efforts to get help for the injured passenger, Singh tragically passed away before receiving treatment.
Both vehicles involved in the accident have been impounded for inspection by the Regional Transport Office. Swamy was presented in court on Monday, where the magistrate denied the police’s request for custody, stating that there was nothing further to recover from the accused. Swamy is now in judicial custody at Yerawada Central Prison.
