Pune Police crack down on local “bhais” terrorizing the area

Pune, 3rd January 2025: Pune Police have recently taken action against notorious criminals who claim to be local “bhais” of the area and have been involved in spreading terror. The authorities have invoked the Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities Act (MPDA) of 1981 to curb these activities. In just 11 months, Pune City Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar has overseen more than 100 MPDA actions, effectively keeping local “bhais” in check.

CP Amitesh Kumar had instructed every Police Station to warn local goons in their jurisdiction. Despite these warnings, 103 goons who failed to heed them faced MPDA action. This includes members of Koyta Gangs and those involved in extortion. The change in Pune Police’s approach to dealing with criminals has reportedly instilled fear among the offenders.

Under the MPDA, a goon can be initially detained for up to three months, with the possibility of an extension to one or two years. The police prepare a detailed proposal based on the individual’s criminal history. Authorities may also extern criminals, prohibiting them from entering specific areas. After release, police monitor these individuals closely. If the person resumes illegal activities, they may be re-arrested. These measures aim to prevent dangerous activities such as rioting, arson, or drug trafficking and maintain public order.

Pune City Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar stated, “The safety of Pune’s people is our first priority, and from that point of view, we have taken various actions. We have externed 103 people involved in ‘Bhaigiri’ and ‘Dadagiri’ from city limits. Police are always working to maintain law and order, ensure women’s safety, and protect senior citizens and children.”
