Hey there, Pune folks! So, it turns out that the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has been sitting on a pile of donations amounting to a whopping Rs 7 crore since the Covid-19 pandemic hit us. Vivek Velankar, the President of Sajag Nagarik Manch Pune, recently called out the PMC for not effectively using these funds that were generously contributed by citizens and companies to combat the Covid crisis.
Back in March 2020, when the pandemic was wreaking havoc, the PMC asked for public donations to help fight against Covid-19. And boy, did the people and companies step up! They donated Rs 4.89 crore in the 2020-21 financial year and Rs 3.10 crore in 2021-22. But here’s the kicker – none of that money was used in the first year, and only a measly Rs 1.30 crore was spent in 2021-22 on corona beds and oxygen supplies.
Fast forward to today, and the PMC still has a hefty Rs 7.43 crore sitting pretty in its Covid CSR account, with Rs 70 lakh in interest accrued on the unspent donations. This has understandably raised some eyebrows among citizens and social activists who are questioning why the municipal administration hasn’t taken any action.
Velankar, speaking on behalf of the public, expressed his disappointment and concern over the lack of urgency in utilizing these funds. He demanded that the PMC use the available money to purchase much-needed medical equipment and supplies for hospitals and clinics to improve healthcare facilities for the citizens of Pune.
So, here’s hoping that the PMC finally gets its act together and puts these donations to good use for the benefit of the people who need it the most. Let’s keep a close eye on how this situation unfolds, shall we? Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story!
