The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has taken a proactive step to address concerns over the quality of water supplied by tankers to housing societies. The introduction of a colour-coded system to distinguish between potable water and sewage treatment plant (STP) water is aimed at ensuring residents receive the correct type of water.
The key directives for water tankers include a colour-coding system, with potable water tankers painted in red or brown and STP water tankers painted green. Strict compliance with these guidelines is mandatory, with no other tankers permitted to transport STP water.
Quality assurance measures have also been put in place, with operators instructed to adhere to the new directives and a mobile application facilitating the supply and tracking of treated STP water. Vehicle maintenance is another focus, with a deadline set for ensuring leak-proof tankers to prevent road accidents caused by spillage.
Enhanced safety measures include the requirement for all tankers to be equipped with functional lids and operators bearing responsibility for accidents resulting from non-compliance. The PMC aims to reduce road accidents caused by water spillage, making leak-proof tankers critical for public safety.
Tanker operators have expressed their support for the new rules, recognizing the importance of maintaining transparency and ensuring residents receive the correct water type. With around 25,000 water tanker trips daily in Pune, the implementation of these safety and quality measures is crucial for the well-being of residents.
As the January 15 deadline approaches, the focus is on PMC’s enforcement of these measures to ensure the safety and quality of drinking water supplied to residents and prevent misuse of water resources.
