Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has been on a mission to revamp the city’s road safety measures by removing 250 unscientific speed breakers within just two weeks. These speed humps were found to be non-compliant with the standards set by the Indian Road Congress (IRC), causing inconvenience and safety hazards for commuters.

Sahebrao Dandge, a representative from the PMC road department, has assured that the removed speed breakers will be replaced with new ones that adhere to IRC guidelines. The height of circular-shaped humps should not exceed 10cm above the road surface, and urban roads should have a recommended speed limit of 30kmph to ensure safe driving conditions.

A recent survey identified around 3,500 speed breakers on Pune’s extensive road network, with complaints from citizens and activists leading to the PMC’s action. Residents have raised concerns about health issues, traffic congestion, and safety hazards caused by unscientific speed humps.

Looking ahead, PMC plans to continue its efforts by replacing unscientific speed breakers with compliant ones, improving lighting and signage near speed humps, and regularly monitoring and assessing their adherence to prescribed guidelines. This initiative has been welcomed by Pune’s commuters, who hope for a swift implementation of safer alternatives to minimize inconvenience and ensure road safety.
