A shocking revelation has emerged regarding the unused donations of ₹7 crore for Covid relief in Pune. Sajag Nagarik Manch has raised the alarm over the funds lying idle, despite being contributed by citizens and corporations during the peak of the pandemic.
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) had appealed for donations in March 2020 to combat Covid-19, resulting in a total of ₹7.43 crore being collected. However, only ₹1.30 crore of these funds was utilized to purchase essential supplies such as corona beds and oxygen.
The unspent amount, including ₹70 lakh in accrued interest, has sparked public outrage and raised concerns about accountability and administrative efficiency. Vivek Velankar, President of Sajag Nagarik Manch, criticized the PMC for failing to utilize the funds donated during a time of crisis.
Velankar emphasized the importance of immediate action to utilize the funds for public healthcare needs, including the procurement of essential medical equipment and improvements to healthcare facilities. He urged the PMC to demonstrate accountability and restore public trust by ensuring the donations are directed towards the welfare of Pune’s citizens.
The delayed disclosure of the unspent funds on RTI Day highlights the lack of transparency and urgency in addressing the issue. Citizens are eagerly awaiting a concrete response from the administration to ensure the donations are utilized effectively for the greater good.
