Are you tired of dealing with the hassle of public transportation or expensive cab rides? Well, some drivers in Pune have come up with a solution – using their private cars for commercial passenger transport via app-based car-sharing services. But hold on, before you hop in, you might want to think twice.
The Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) has launched a strict campaign targeting these violators. With six dedicated teams in action, they are cracking down on private vehicles being used for commercial passenger transport. It may be convenient for passengers, but it’s illegal under the Motor Vehicles Act.
If you’re thinking of catching a ride in Wagholi, Viman Nagar, Hadapsar, Swargate, Chandni Chowk, or Navale Bridge, beware. The RTO’s Vayuveg squads are out and about, booking rides through these apps as dummy passengers to gather evidence. And if you’re caught violating the law, you could face fines up to ₹10,000 and even have your vehicle seized.
An RTO official emphasized the importance of cracking down on this illegal practice, stating that it undermines legal public transport systems and violates the Motor Vehicles Act. So, next time you consider booking a ride in a private car through an app, remember – it may not be as innocent as it seems.
