The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) is gearing up for a year of significant changes under the leadership of Commissioner Yogesh Mhase. In a recent interview with Punekar News, Mhase outlined the key priorities for 2025, with a focus on addressing traffic congestion, promoting sustainable urban development, and enhancing public amenities.
One of the major challenges facing Pune is traffic management, and PMRDA is taking steps to alleviate congestion by creating arterial roads and addressing ‘missing links’ in the city’s transportation network. Plans are in place to redirect unnecessary vehicular movement outside of core areas, with a particular focus on areas near Chakan.
In addition to traffic management, PMRDA is also working to support sustainable urban growth by streamlining legal processes for construction projects and removing illegal encroachments. Efforts to combat unauthorized hoardings and constructions are already underway, with a focus on ensuring compliance with urban planning norms.
Enhancing basic amenities is another key priority for PMRDA, with plans to establish solid and liquid waste management facilities in all 233 villages within the Urban Growth Center region. Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) will be constructed to prevent untreated drainage from entering rivers, and solid waste management facilities will be set up in urban growth centers.
To improve efficiency and simplify processes, PMRDA is integrating advanced technology into its operations, including E-office systems and technology for service delivery and project management. Additionally, road development projects are being aligned with the approved Development Plan (DP) to improve connectivity and support balanced regional growth.
Overall, PMRDA’s initiatives for 2025 aim to address key challenges facing Pune and pave the way for sustainable and inclusive urban development in the region.
