Pune, a city known for its rich history and vibrant culture, is now making headlines for its rapid adoption of electric vehicles (EVs). With sales skyrocketing to 92,402 units in 2024, Pune has emerged as a frontrunner in Maharashtra’s EV market. This significant increase of nearly 60,000 vehicles compared to the previous year can be attributed to a variety of factors, including rising fuel prices, growing environmental consciousness, and the cost-effectiveness of electric vehicles.
According to data from the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO), the city now boasts approximately 3,00,000 electric vehicles on its roads, making up a substantial portion of the total 40 lakh registered vehicles in Pune. This surge in EV popularity is particularly impressive considering that only 8,668 EVs were registered in the city back in 2021.
Swapnil Bhosale, Deputy Regional Transport Officer of Pune, credits the government’s decision to waive motor vehicle tax on electric vehicles for making them more affordable. This, coupled with increased production, has led to a significant rise in EV sales in the city. Two-wheelers dominate the EV market in Pune, followed by four-wheelers, with buses and auto-rickshaws seeing lower demand.
In terms of infrastructure development, Pune has seen a substantial increase in charging stations to cater to the growing number of EVs on its roads. As of January 2025, the city leads Maharashtra in EV infrastructure, hosting 1,894 of the state’s 3,073 charging stations.
This surge in EV adoption in Pune is part of a larger trend across Maharashtra, with the state aiming for EVs to constitute 10% of new vehicle registrations by 2025 as per its Electric Vehicle Policy 2021. The policy offers attractive incentives, including a 15% subsidy on EV purchases, capped at specific amounts for different vehicle categories.
Overall, the rapid growth of EV adoption in Pune can be attributed to an increase in EV manufacturing companies, a greater variety of electric vehicle options, significant savings in fuel costs, improved availability of charging stations, and a growing preference for environmentally friendly vehicles among consumers.
