Hey Pune peeps, did you know that the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is on a mission to control the population of stray cats in the city? Yep, you heard that right! The PMC has partnered with the Universal Animal Welfare Society to sterilise those cute little feline friends.
In the past three years, a whopping 6,542 cats have been sterilised, costing the PMC a total of Rs 99,66,500. That’s a whole lot of kitty love right there! The PMC is shelling out Rs 1,900 per sterilisation to the agency, so you know they’re serious about this.
But wait, it’s not just the cats that are getting some TLC. The PMC is also catching stray dogs, sterilising and vaccinating them to keep their population in check. These lucky pups are then released back into their natural habitat. Talk about a win-win situation!
And guess what? The PMC is now using the same method to control the stray cat population in the city. The process kicked off in 2022, with the civic body floating tenders and appointing the Universal Animal Welfare Society for the job. The agency takes the cats in their own vehicle, gives them a little snip-snip, vaccinates them, and then sends them back to their homes with a cute little tag.
Dr. Sarika Funde, the Chief Veterinary Officer of PMC, is thrilled about the progress. She said, “The PMC started sterilising stray cats in 2022, making it the first civic body in the State to take this initiative. It’s made a huge difference in reducing the number of stray cats roaming the streets.”
So there you have it, folks! Let’s give a round of applause to the PMC and the Universal Animal Welfare Society for their pawsome efforts in keeping our city safe and sound for both humans and our furry friends.
