Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, the State Water Resources Minister, recently visited Pune and emphasized the importance of sustainable water management practices. He criticized the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) for approving large-scale housing projects without considering the available water resources and urged them to justify their increased water demand.
During a workshop on the river linking project, the minister highlighted the need for PMC to explore alternatives like recycling wastewater and treating sewage before requesting more water. He stressed that the civic body must bear the financial burden of any additional water supply.
Key concerns raised by the minister include inefficient resource management by PMC, the need for recycling as a precondition for increased water allocations, and the financial implications that PMC must consider.
In order to promote sustainable water use, Vikhe Patil proposed measures such as mandatory recycling targets, reassessment of policies for large housing complexes, and public awareness initiatives on water conservation.
The minister also announced a crackdown on illegal encroachments around dam areas in Maharashtra and instructed officials to prepare detailed reports on pending water projects for timely completion.
The importance of water recycling and efficient management practices was highlighted by Vikhe Patil, emphasizing the need for municipalities to invest in technologies for treating sewage and reusing water for non-potable purposes. By addressing systemic inefficiencies and promoting accountability, civic bodies like PMC can work towards achieving long-term water security.
