- Ready for Release: Turtles Set to Return to the Wild
After months of rehabilitation, the turtles rescued from smugglers are finally ready to be released back into the wild. The department has chosen five locations along the Godavari River basin for their return, with Maharashtra being the primary destination for the majority of the turtles. Other states, including Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Assam, will also see some of these turtles being released.
- Phased Release Process
The release of the turtles will be carried out in four to five phases, with discussions currently underway with forest agencies in various states. Tushar Chavan, Deputy Conservator of Forest (Wildlife) with the Pune Forest Department, mentioned that the process has already begun in Maharashtra and is expected to be completed by the end of February. While there are no plans for a second phase at the moment, it remains a possibility for the future.
