Hey Pune peeps, did you know that despite a decrease in overall accidents, road fatalities in our region remained high in 2024? According to the Highway Police, a total of 1,035 lives were lost on highways and state roads last year. That’s a slight improvement from the 1,191 deaths recorded in 2023.
Superintendent of Police for Highways, Vikrant Deshmukh, revealed that the Pune region covers a whopping 6,900 kilometers of roads, including major routes like the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, and highways connecting Pune to Bangalore, Nashik, and other cities.
In 2024, there were a total of 1,854 accidents, resulting in 2,098 injuries. Two-wheeler riders and pedestrians made up 65-70% of the fatalities. The police are cracking down on violations like riding without helmets, drunk driving, lane cutting, and speeding.
Deshmukh emphasized the importance of safe driving, especially on major highways. The police are also conducting awareness programs to educate drivers about traffic rules and safe driving practices.
So folks, let’s all do our part to make our roads safer for everyone. Drive safe and follow the rules!
