Pune is currently facing a concerning situation with a cluster of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) cases being detected in the city. Since January 9, 24 patients have been admitted to various hospitals, with three patients from Sinhagad Road testing positive for Campylobacter jejuni bacteria in their stool samples. This bacteria is known to trigger GBS and is often associated with contaminated food or water sources.

One patient is currently on ventilator support at Poona Hospital, highlighting the severity of the situation. Health experts suspect possible contamination in Sinhagad Road, Dhayari, and nearby areas and have initiated an urgent investigation.

Dr. Neena Borade, Health Chief at Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), revealed that 24 GBS cases have been identified in just two weeks, with patients scattered across the city, suburbs, and rural areas. Samples from affected patients have been sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) for testing, and efforts are underway to collect samples from the remaining patients.

Doctors are emphasizing the role of Campylobacter jejuni in triggering GBS and are pointing towards contaminated food or water as the likely cause of the outbreak. Hospitals currently treating GBS patients include Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital, Poona Hospital, Smt. Kashibai Navale Hospital, Bharati Hospital, Ankura Hospital in Aundh, and Sahyadri Hospital in Deccan.

Health authorities are investigating possible water contamination in Sinhagad Road, Dhayari, Kirkatwadi, and surrounding areas, recalling a similar outbreak in the U.S. and Mexico in 2011 linked to inadequately treated drinking water. Residents are advised to boil drinking water and ensure proper food preparation to prevent further cases.

The PMC is on high alert, closely monitoring the situation and urging hospitals and laboratories to report any suspected GBS cases promptly. The community is advised to seek medical attention if experiencing symptoms such as diarrhea or abdominal pain. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
