Pune, 24th January 2025: Crimes against women in Pune are on the rise, with reported cases of rape, molestation, and offences under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012 increasing, according to Pune City Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar. The police are focusing on quick case registration and ensuring justice and support for victims.
During the annual crime review meeting, Kumar highlighted the increase in serious crimes against women in the city. He stressed the importance of promptly registering such cases and providing continuous support to victims. “In cases of crimes against women, it is crucial that victims feel supported and heard. We are working towards a victim-centric approach in all such cases,” Kumar stated.
Police have engaged with around 1,200 women complainants in assault cases, offering them support and ensuring they are not intimidated or harassed by the accused. Investigating officers have been instructed to prioritize victim concerns during their investigations.
While murders in the city have decreased, other crimes have seen a significant increase:
– Rape cases: Increased from 410 in 2023 to 505 in 2024.
– Molestation cases: Rose from 775 to 864.
– Grievous hurt cases: Increased from 1,390 to 1,535.
– Fraud cases: Jumped significantly from 1,108 in 2023 to 2,021 in 2024, mainly due to more rigorous registration of cybercrime and fraud incidents.
– Vehicle thefts: Slightly decreased from 1,989 to 1,982.
– House break-ins: Reduced from 604 to 527.
In response to the rise in chain snatching incidents, Kumar announced that offenders will now face charges under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), 1999. This measure is expected to act as a strong deterrent and reduce chain snatching incidents.
Pune Police are also conducting awareness programs in schools to educate children about safe and unsafe touching, with the aim of increasing awareness and encouraging reporting of child abuse cases.
