Pune, 24th January 2025: It’s not every day that an ambulance becomes a mobile maternity ward, but that’s exactly what has been happening in Maharashtra. The state government’s free ‘Dial 108’ ambulance service has been a savior for countless women in labor, providing emergency assistance to 1.5 lakh pregnant women and even facilitating the delivery of 3,695 babies en route to hospitals.

Launched in 2014, the ‘Dial 108’ service was designed to provide urgent medical care, reaching emergency sites within 10 to 15 minutes of receiving a call. In the past decade, it has attended to over 9.5 lakh patients, including those with life-threatening conditions like strokes, heart attacks, and accident-related injuries.

Of the patients assisted, 6.14 lakh were in critical need of emergency medical attention for various ailments. The service has focused on pregnant women, with 75 ambulances stationed across Pune equipped with medical staff and essential equipment for safe deliveries.

The efforts of the medical teams have led to numerous success stories, with mothers and newborns receiving immediate care during emergency deliveries. A senior official involved in the service commended the swift response and coordination of the ambulance staff in saving lives and ensuring safe childbirth, even in challenging situations.

The Dial 108 ambulance service continues to be a beacon of excellence in emergency healthcare, providing a lifeline for thousands of citizens in need.
