Hey Pune residents, let’s talk about the latest updates on traffic management efforts in our city. It seems like the restrictions on heavy vehicle movement have really made a difference in reducing hazardous areas. For example, heavy vehicles were banned on the Pune–Ahmednagar Road during peak hours, which has helped ease congestion and improve traffic flow.
The police have reported a decrease in fatal accidents last year, which is great news. There were 310 fatalities in 2024 compared to 334 in 2023. However, the total number of road accidents has gone up to 1,400 in 2024 from 1,230 in the previous year.
To streamline traffic, the police have implemented some measures like issuing notifications for one-ways and U-turn bans, as well as prohibiting heavy vehicles on specific routes to reduce congestion on major city roads. They have also increased enforcement, which has led to improvements in road safety.
Some key statistics comparing 2023 and 2024 show a significant increase in cases of drunken driving, wrong-side driving, triple-seat riding, and rash driving. In fact, 1,345 driving licenses were canceled in 2024 for repeated traffic violations.
The tragic Porsche car accident in May 2024, which resulted in the deaths of two IT engineers, has sparked intensified enforcement efforts. The incident involved a 17-year-old driver who was allegedly drunk, leading to public outrage over attempts to protect the accused. The police have arrested ten individuals, including the driver’s parents and hospital staff, for tampering with evidence.
While progress has been made in reducing accidents and fatalities, the increase in total accidents shows the need for continued vigilance and improvements in infrastructure. The police are urging the public to cooperate by following traffic rules to ensure safer roads in Pune. Stay safe out there, everyone!
