Pune railway station is gearing up to bring back a prepaid auto rickshaw scheme to make traveling safer and more convenient for passengers. The scheme will cater specifically to women, senior citizens, and late-night commuters, addressing concerns over inconsistent fares and passenger safety.

The decision to reintroduce the prepaid auto rickshaw scheme was made during a recent meeting on June 18, where stakeholders discussed the operational details. The initiative aims to provide a reliable and secure mode of transportation, especially during late-night hours when safety concerns are heightened.

The scheme will be launched on an experimental basis at Pune railway station in collaboration with the Auto Rickshaw Association. It will utilize a mobile app developed by Pune’s auto unions for booking and tracking rides, ensuring transparency and efficiency.

Passengers will pay at the prepaid booth and receive receipts, one of which will be given to the auto driver at the destination for fare record-keeping. Surveillance cameras will also be installed at the booth to monitor activities and enhance passenger safety.

The DCP (traffic) has called for applications from social organizations, unions, and private entities interested in running the prepaid scheme by June 22, 2024. This collaborative effort aims to ensure successful implementation and operation of the scheme.

The reinstatement of the prepaid auto rickshaw scheme at Pune railway station is expected to improve public transportation services by addressing issues such as overcharging, refusal of short-distance rides, and passenger inconvenience. Authorities hope that this initiative will enhance the overall commuter experience and make traveling in Pune more convenient for everyone.
