Pune, known for its vibrant culture and fast-paced lifestyle, has recently been in the spotlight for its lagging transparency in the City E-Governance Index. A survey conducted by the Policy Research Organisation (PRO) revealed some interesting findings about the 29 civic bodies in the State.
During a press meet, PRO President Tanmay Kanitkar, Director Neha Mahajan, and Project Head Shweta Shah shared details about the survey. According to Kanitkar, with India expected to have over 90 crore Internet users by December 2025, it is crucial for government services to be easily accessible to citizens. The Maharashtra E-Governance policies aim to bring transparency and provide necessary information efficiently.
The report highlighted the top-ranking civic bodies, with Pune, Kolhapur, and Pimpri-Chinchwad leading the pack. On the other end of the spectrum, Jalgaon, Parbhani, and Jalna were found to be the bottom rank holders. In terms of transparency, Kolhapur, Mira Bhayandar, and Pimpri-Chinchwad were the top scorers, with Pune notably absent from the top three ranks.
The criteria for the City E-Governance Index included online services offered by civic bodies, the ease-of-use of their websites and apps, and the level of detailed information provided to the public. Residents were asked to rate their civic body on a scale from 0 to 10, with PMC excelling in technical aspects but falling short in transparency.
As cities continue to evolve in the digital age, the need for transparent and efficient governance becomes increasingly important. With the release of this report, it is hoped that civic bodies like PMC will take steps to improve their transparency and better serve the citizens of Pune.
