Pune is currently facing a health crisis as the Maharashtra Health Department has reported 101 suspected cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) in the district. The first case was detected in Kirkatwadi under the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on January 9, and since then, cases have spread to various localities including Sinhagad Road, Khadakwasla, Nandedgaon, Nanded City, Dhayari, and Ambegaon within PMC limits, as well as in Pimpri-Chinchwad and other districts.
The current status of the GBS outbreak as of January 26 is as follows: 61 cases in Pune Rural, 19 cases in Pune Municipal Corporation, 15 cases in Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), and 6 cases in other districts. Among the patients, 68 are men and 33 are women, with 41 patients in intensive care units and 16 on ventilator support. Unfortunately, one patient from Solapur has died due to the infection, while four have recovered and been discharged.
Citizens are urged to watch out for symptoms such as sudden weakness or paralysis in the legs or hands, difficulty walking, and persistent diarrhea lasting several days. The state-level rapid response team has been deployed to affected areas to address the outbreak, conducting extensive surveys across households and testing water samples for contamination.
Health education teams are conducting door-to-door awareness campaigns on disease prevention, and private medical practitioners have been directed to report any GBS cases immediately. Authorities have issued guidelines for citizens to prevent the spread of GBS, including ensuring drinking water is free from contamination, maintaining proper hygiene with food, and visiting government hospitals promptly if symptoms arise.
The Health Department has assured citizens that proactive measures are in place to contain the outbreak, emphasizing the importance of early detection and treatment. Citizens are urged not to panic and to follow all precautionary guidelines to stay safe and healthy.
