Hey Pune peeps! Looks like the local body elections in the state have hit a roadblock once again. The issue of OBC reservation has been causing delays, and a hearing in the Supreme Court today didn’t bring any resolution. The next hearing is now scheduled for February 25, pushing the elections further back by another month.
Political parties have been gearing up for the elections, with the Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray group even considering contesting the Mumbai Municipal Corporation on its own. Former Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has been holding meetings with office bearers in preparation.
The state government had requested the Supreme Court to decide on OBC reservation before conducting the elections, leading to the delays. Meanwhile, a BJP workshop in Nagpur saw Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stating that the elections would be held in the next three months.
It’s been four years since the last local body elections, and the administration of these bodies is currently being handled by administrators. With 29 municipal corporations, 257 municipalities, 26 zilla parishads, and 289 panchayat samitis in the state waiting for elections, the delay is causing some frustration.
The Supreme Court has not stayed the elections, but the ongoing OBC reservation issue is causing a hold-up. Let’s hope for a speedy resolution so that Pune and the rest of the state can get back to the democratic process soon!
