Hey there, Pune folks! It seems like there’s been a bit of a buzz around town about Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) lately. But before you start panicking, let’s take a closer look at the facts.

According to the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) Health Department, GBS cases have actually been pretty common in the city. In fact, last year alone, there were 185 cases reported in both private and government hospitals. So, it’s not exactly a new phenomenon.

However, the recent spike in cases during January 2025 has definitely caught people’s attention. This has led to some misconceptions about the condition spreading like wildfire. To set the record straight, the PMC Health Department decided to dig into the data from city hospitals for the whole of 2024. And guess what? GBS has been hanging around Pune for quite some time now.

When it comes to hospitals treating GBS patients, Dinanath Mangeshkar Hospital seems to have had the highest number of cases, followed closely by KEM Hospital, Sassoon General Hospital, Jupiter Hospital, Jehangir Hospital, and Bharati Hospital. Other hospitals in the mix included Kashibai Navale Hospital, Sahyadri Hospital, Inlaks Hospital, and more.

Dr. Yallapa Jadhav from Sassoon General Hospital shared some sobering news that there were eight deaths due to GBS at the hospital last year. These unfortunate incidents happened throughout the year, with one in January, two in February, two in September, two in November, and one in December.

But before you start getting too worried, PMC Health Chief Dr. Nina Borade wants to reassure everyone that GBS cases are nothing new in Pune. The Health Department is on the case, monitoring the situation closely, and working hard to combat any misinformation that might be floating around.

So, there you have it, folks. The lowdown on GBS in Pune. Remember to stay informed, stay calm, and take care of yourselves!
