Hey Punekars, here’s some good news for you! The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided not to increase property tax this year, making it the ninth consecutive year without a tax hike.
It seems that the ruling parties in the State have instructed the civic body to refrain from imposing any tax hike on citizens, especially with the upcoming civic elections on the horizon. A proposal has been put forth to the Standing Committee to keep property tax rates unchanged, and since the Municipal Commissioner is the Administrator, the proposal is expected to be approved without any issues.
With the PMC currently under Administrator rule, it is being said that the decision to avoid a tax hike is a strategic move, considering the upcoming elections. The Maha Yuti ruling party in the State has control over the civic administration, and any tax hike could potentially be used against them by the opposition during the polls.
As the civic body gears up for the Civic Budget 2025-26, Municipal Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale is conducting review meetings with various departments. According to a resolution passed by the General Body, any proposal for a tax hike must be approved before February 20.
The Property Tax department has already presented its proposal to the Standing Committee, which is set to be approved in a meeting on Friday, January 31. It’s worth noting that there has been no change in property tax rates since 2016, except for water cess.
So, while there won’t be a tax increase this year, all existing concessions on property tax will continue to benefit citizens. It seems like a win-win situation for Punekars as they can enjoy the same tax rates for another year.
