Hey there, Pune residents! We’ve got some concerning news about the water supply in certain areas of the city. A recent investigation by the PMC has uncovered some pretty alarming findings. It turns out that water samples from private tanker sources in areas affected by Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) have tested positive for dangerously high levels of E. coli.

Out of 15 samples that were tested, a whopping 14 were found to be contaminated with E. coli. This poses a serious health risk to residents in Dhayari, Sinhagad Road, and Kirkatwadi, where multiple cases of GBS have been reported. It’s been confirmed that people in these areas may have unknowingly been using this unsafe water for drinking, cooking, and other household activities, putting themselves at risk for harmful bacteria exposure.

A senior PMC official stated that drinking water should ideally have zero E. coli, but the levels found in these samples were way above the safe limit. This indicates the presence of other harmful pathogens as well, making the situation even more concerning.

The water samples were collected by the PMC’s Swargate water distribution team and tested at the Parvati Water Purification Laboratory. It was discovered that many housing societies mix tanker water with their municipal supply, leading to widespread contamination in storage tanks.

In response to these findings, the PMC has issued strict notices to private water suppliers who have not yet collected bleaching powder from the Parvati treatment plant. They have also advised residents to boil water before consumption and recommended that societies clean their storage tanks properly to prevent further health risks.

This investigation is ongoing as authorities work to monitor water quality across the city and understand the link between poor water quality and gastrointestinal infections that can trigger GBS. Stay safe and stay informed, Pune!
