Pune, known for its notorious traffic jams, is gearing up to tackle the issue head-on with a massive infrastructure project—the Rs 42,000-crore Ring Road. Scheduled to kick off in February 2025, this 170-km outer Ring Road around Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad is expected to be up and running by June 2027. Spearheaded by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), this project aims to ease heavy vehicle traffic within the city.
Here’s a rundown of the key features of the Ring Road project:
1. Relief for Heavy Traffic: The Ring Road will divert heavy vehicles from Nashik, Solapur, Satara, and Ahilya Nagar, allowing them to bypass Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, thus reducing congestion within the cities.
2. Public Transport Development: The project will also enhance public transportation by integrating Metro and BRTS routes along the bypass.
3. Project Breakdown: The Ring Road is split into the Western and Eastern parts.
– Western Part (69 km): Catering to traffic from the south, including the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and Satara.
– Eastern Part (101 km): Handling traffic from the east, including roads from Solapur, Nashik, and Ahmednagar.
Both sections have been divided into 12 segments, with 12 tenders already issued to ensure simultaneous construction across the areas.
The construction timeline is set to kick off in February 2025, with a deadline for completion by June 2027. Land acquisition is well underway, with 99% of the land needed for the western part secured and 86% for the eastern part.
The Ring Road will feature 15 tunnels through hilly terrain, along with significant bridges over key landmarks like the Khadakwasla Dam and major roads. The route details for the Western and Eastern parts have been meticulously planned to ensure efficient traffic flow.
Once operational, the Ring Road is expected to alleviate traffic congestion, shorten travel times, and bolster economic growth by enhancing connectivity to industrial hubs like Talegaon, Chakan, and Shikrapur. This project signifies a significant step towards improving traffic conditions and fostering development in the Pune region.
