Pimpri Chinchwad, 2nd February 2025: A leopard sighting in the Nigdi area of Pimpri Chinchwad sparked a rapid and well-coordinated response from various authorities. The Pune Forest Department, RESQ Charitable Trust, PCMC Police, and Fire Department all sprang into action.

The incident unfolded at 9:15 AM when Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF) Deepak Pawar received information about the leopard’s presence in the Sant Kabir Udyan area of Nigdi. A quick call to Neha Panchamiya, Founder & President of RESQ Charitable Trust, set the wheels in motion. By 9:45 AM, Neha Panchamiya and Nachiket Utpat from RESQ were on the scene, assessing the situation and tracking the leopard’s movements. Initially spotted in a public park, the leopard had made its way into the premises of a row house where only caretakers were present.

After a thorough search, the leopard was found hiding behind a tin shed at the back of the house. As the various teams cautiously approached, the leopard made a move back into the public park. With the area secured by the Police and Fire Department, the leopard sought cover next to a room where a woman and two young adults were present.

Dr. Kalyani Thakur from RESQ CT safely tranquilised the leopard, allowing for its safe extraction and transport to the Wildlife Transit Treatment Centre in Bavdhan for evaluation. Identified as a healthy male, the leopard is currently under medical assessment.

The successful rescue operation was a collaborative effort involving the Pune Forest Department, RESQ Charitable Trust, PCMC Police, PCMC Fire Department, Hon. Wildlife Warden Aditya Paranjape, and local wildlife organization Scales & Tales. The support and cooperation of the local community were instrumental in ensuring a safe and efficient rescue, according to Mahadev Mohite, DCF (T) of the Pune Forest Department.
