Pune is set to undergo a major transportation transformation with the proposed new metro rail routes. Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Murlidhar Mohol, has put forward plans for direct metro lines connecting key areas in the city. These include a line from Kharadi to Pune Airport, another from Katraj to Hinjawadi, and a multimodal transport hub at Kharadi.

In a recent meeting, Mohol urged the Pune Municipal Corporation to approve the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for these new routes, which will be prepared by the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited. The aim is to improve connectivity and make travel easier for residents.

The proposed metro line connecting Pune International Airport to Khadakwasla is part of the larger Khadakwasla-Swargate-Hadapsar-Kharadi route. The transport hub at Kharadi will be a crucial interchange point, benefiting commuters from surrounding areas such as Chandani Chowk, Wagholi, Nigdi, Swargate, Shivajinagar, Hinjawadi, Khadakwasla, and Hadapsar.

To further ease traffic congestion, a double-decker flyover is also in the works along the Vanaz to Chandani Chowk route. This infrastructure development is expected to significantly improve Pune’s public transportation system and provide relief to commuters.

Maha-Metro Managing Director Shravan Hardikar has confirmed receipt of Minister Mohol’s letter regarding the DPR, with the next step being for PMC to formally send a letter to Maha-Metro to proceed with the preparation of the report. These ambitious proposals are set to make Pune more accessible and reduce road traffic, enhancing the city’s overall transportation network.
