Tata Motors has recently joined forces with the Government of Maharashtra in a groundbreaking initiative to restore 1000 water bodies across more than 20 districts in the state. The aim of this partnership is to combat water scarcity in rural Maharashtra, particularly in regions like Vidarbha and Marathwada that have been severely affected by dwindling water resources.

By rejuvenating 356 water bodies in 2024, Tata Motors has already contributed to the creation of an additional 7000 million litres of water storage capacity. Building on this success, the company plans to expand its efforts to over 20 districts, significantly boosting water availability in critical areas.

The project, known as the “Gal Mukt Dharan Gal Yukt Shivar Yojana,” focuses on desilting and improving the capacity of existing water bodies. This not only addresses water scarcity issues but also aims to increase water availability for irrigation and drinking purposes, thereby supporting local farmers and enhancing their livelihoods.

One of the key aspects of the initiative is the partnership with the NAAM Foundation, which plays a crucial role in mobilizing local communities and ensuring the success of the project. The scheme also provides funds for the transportation of silt from water bodies to farmers’ fields, thereby improving soil fertility and benefiting both water resources and agricultural lands.

Vinod Kulkarni, Head of Corporate Social Responsibility at Tata Motors, emphasized the company’s commitment to scaling up the initiative in order to make a meaningful impact on rural communities in Maharashtra. Priya Khan, Officer on Special Duty at the Chief Minister’s Office, praised the initiative as a people’s movement that is strengthening the state’s resilience to droughts.

Ganesh Thorat, CEO of the NAAM Foundation, expressed satisfaction with the expanding reach of their collective efforts and highlighted the significant positive impact on rural communities in Maharashtra. With a focus on transparency and efficiency, the project is set to make a lasting impact on the state’s water resources and contribute to sustainable development.

This collaborative effort between Tata Motors, the Government of Maharashtra, and other partners underscores the importance of addressing water scarcity and promoting sustainable development in rural areas. By working together and leveraging innovative solutions, these organizations are paving the way for a more water-secure future for the people of Maharashtra.
