The Union Budget 2025-26 has brought good news for Pune, with a total of Rs 1,068 crore sanctioned for the development of the city’s infrastructure. The majority of the funds, Rs 838.96 crore, are allocated for the expansion of Pune Metro, with the remaining Rs 230 crore earmarked for the Mula-Mutha River pollution abatement project.
The Pune Metro expansion is progressing well, with work on the Nigdi and Katraj extensions underway. The Pimpri-Nigdi extension has already started its groundwork, and the Swargate-Katraj underground metro is set to begin construction in the coming months. The increasing ridership on the metro, which has reached 1.6 lakh daily passengers, highlights the need for further expansion to meet the growing demand.
One of the key concerns for metro commuters is the need for improved last-mile connectivity, and efforts are being made to address this issue. Maha Metro is studying new metro routes and exploring solutions to enhance the public transport system in Pune.
In addition to the metro expansion, the Mula-Mutha River rejuvenation project is gaining momentum with a budget of Rs 230 crore. The project includes the construction of 10 new sewage treatment plants to reduce pollution and improve water quality. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has provided a loan of Rs 990.26 crore to support this initiative, with collaboration between the Centre and Pune Municipal Corporation.
Overall, the Union Budget’s allocation for Pune is set to bring significant advancements in public transport infrastructure and environmental conservation efforts, ultimately improving the quality of life and sustainability for the city’s residents.
