Are you tired of spending hours stuck in traffic on the highway in Pune? Well, the good news is that relief is on the way! The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has given the green light to a new service road project that aims to ease congestion and improve road safety along a 32.4-kilometre stretch from Khed-Shivapur to Ravet.

With an estimated cost of ₹604 crore, construction on this two-lane service road is set to kick off in March 2025. This project couldn’t come at a better time, as the existing highway sees a whopping 2.1 lakh vehicles pass through daily.

The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has already acquired 90% of the land needed for the project, with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) working on securing the remaining 10%. This joint effort highlights the importance of improving urban infrastructure in Pune.

Once completed, the service road will feature two lanes on each side, each measuring 3.5 metres wide. This design is expected to benefit around one lakh vehicles daily, providing much-needed relief for commuters and smaller vehicles.

In addition to reducing congestion and improving travel efficiency, the project is also expected to lower accident rates, save fuel, and enhance overall traffic flow. NHAI Senior Engineer Subhash Ghante has confirmed that the land acquisition process is nearing completion, with the tender process expected to begin shortly.

The construction will be carried out in three phases, covering key areas like Khed-Shivapur to the new Katraj tunnel, Warje to Balewadi, and Wakad to Ravet. This project is just one part of a larger strategy to address Pune’s growing traffic issues and provide local commuters with a safer and more efficient route.

So, mark your calendars for March 2025 and get ready to enjoy a smoother ride along the new service road in Pune!
