Chipko Movement-Inspired Padyatra to Protect Riverside Ecosystems in Pune
In a nod to the historic Chipko Movement, citizens in Pune are gearing up for a padyatra to raise awareness about the importance of riverside ecosystems. The march, scheduled for February 9, 2025, aims to draw attention to the role of these natural areas in preventing floods, maintaining groundwater levels, and preserving biodiversity.
Organized by volunteers from Pune River Revival, the event will call for sustainable development practices that prioritize eco-friendly riverfront projects and avoid tree cutting. Participants, including Baner residents like Arati Mhaskar, stress the need for balancing development with environmental conservation.
Led by key organizers Shailaja Deshpande, Ajay Phatak, Ketaki Ghate, and others, the Chipko Padyatra will kick off from Kalmadi High School in Baner and conclude at the Ram-Mula Confluence on Aundh-Balewadi Link Road. The goal is to unite citizens in safeguarding Pune’s natural heritage and advocating for environmentally responsible urban planning.
As the city grapples with rapid urbanization, this grassroots movement serves as a reminder to prioritize nature conservation in all development initiatives. Stay tuned for updates from the padyatra as citizens come together to protect Pune’s riverside ecosystems.
